Rain Song
Gertjan Wijnalda, june 2002

about this song
a twin of the (much) later written raining in my life, this song was another in the storytelling tradition of lucy. i definately enjoy writing short stories like this, and when i finished the song just before i went off to italy, i've been constantly wanting to play it again during the month i was away!

best part of the song, for me: the line 'the longer he walks, the longer his way back will be' in the bridge near the end of the song. if that ain't a truism ...

Rain Song
(G.L. Wijnalda)

She's waiting outside, she is watching the light
Of the only train that's still in the station
She's looking if someone is still getting out on the stage

She's checking her watch, she's clutching her rose even harder
It's the last straw she's got
When the train gets away, she's still standing there
Maybe he's got a train later

And as the wind's playing games with a paper before her
She sees she is the paper and the whole world's the wind
She looks up, and notices that the weather's reflecting her mood

It started raining
It started raining
She's out on her own again

He is staring outside, he's been waiting all night
For somebody there, in the cafe
He's hoping that somehow his luck might've changed today

And he turns around, tells the barman to bring him another round
A bourbon, a scotch, a whiskey or a glass of rose
He don't care, he don't mind, he'll be waiting there anyway

And as the wind's playing games with a paper before him
He sees that he is the paper and the whole world's the wind
He looks outside and sees that the streets are getting wet again

Chorus

When the cafe is closing, he's walking outside
Into a woman with a rose in her hand
They're both on the ground, their eyes meet
They start laughing about their grief
But the weather ain't better, they're drowning
They should get inside now very soon
So he turns around, but the longer he walks
The longer his way back will be

It never stops raining
It never stops raining
They're out on their own again
